The Beginning


After weeks of fumbling with Unity, I've finally completed my first experience (game) with the engine! This is my third iteration of what I had planned to make for this game jam:

At first it was going to be a nightmare about a twisted game show, but the logistics of how it would work were a bit too overwhelming for me, so I reconsidered. Then it was being a priest in a confessional booth with a demon, but I grew frustrated with spending all of my time writing dialogue tree options and I didn't feel like figuring out how to make a working dialogue system. Lastly, I decided to bite the bullet and start working with Unity 3D for the first time, designing a tense experience situated in tight hallways and rooms with a feeling of dread that rises until the climax. The game also allows the player to explore the ship multiple times to discover the odd things everywhere, or just make their own conclusions to increasing questions! The two-minute time limit allows this to happen naturally. At the time of writing this, there's a bug that makes it difficult to replay, and I'll be addressing that a bit later.

I'm quite proud of the results, considering it is my first time working with this engine and 3D games in general! I learned a lot of awesome features that Unity offers, including ProBuilder, spatial audio, timeline/animation, and occlusion culling. In fact, I created this experience with minimal coding, though the most important scripted features (the blood pool's movement and blinking) were graciously provided by my friend Culture. All physical assets apart from the blood pool's planes were made with ProBuilder because I was too focused on making progress to deal with learning Blender as I would have liked. However, I will be taking part in the Haunted PS1's Summer of Screams game jam, which will allow me to learn Blender and much more about Unity.

I'll be updating the game shortly to fix a minor bug when returning to the menu screen after the experience is over, as the buttons do not respond to the mouse. In addition, if I feel the need to fix a bug that's reported or discovered, I will do that. Otherwise it's basically done, though I may revisit this game's setting and experience in the future, which would be a near-complete overhaul.
